About The Retreat Society

The Retreat Society, which has now been offering retreats for the past two-and-a-half years, believes that our humanity is at its best wherever it shares the most - in art, science, philosophy or religion. (For a more in-depth statement of our policy go to: ‘Our Spirit' )

In practice we are a friendly, open group of people from a wide variety of religious and cultural backgrounds who come together for mutual support and for the sake of our personal and collective –

  • spiritual progress;
  • psychological well-being;
  • cultural awareness;
  • and meditational development.

Our retreats consist of -

  • Periods of silent meditation
  • Spiritual Reading according to the ancient tradition of Lectio Divina (the texts chosen relate directly to the theme of the retreat)
  • Quiet periods for private reflection
  • One or two talks on the theme of the day
  • Personal Interviews, for spiritual direction (optional)

Our Spiritual Director

Our Spiritual Director, John Hardy, has a wide knowledge of world religions, holding degrees in The History and Philosophy of Religion and Social Anthropology. He is recipient of the Hanson Prize, of London University, for work in Religious Studies. His 'spiritual formation' has included a Jungian training analysis, supervised practice at a major London psychiatric hospital, ordination and work as a priest and bishop within the Old Catholic tradition and Zen training in Germany and Korea.

Over the past three decades John has lectured widely and conducted numerous retreats, at home and abroad. For several years, he led regular retreats at what was the Retreat Centre of Ealing Abbey in London.

John also gives regular talks in Brighton. Please click here for more information.
